A Their Story interview with Sean Martin and Marco Ciappelli
Guest: Corin Imai

The organization telling us their story today is DomainTools.

The value of data science extends beyond the data itself

Having met Corin Imai in many roles and many locations over the years, we were thrilled to finally sit down with her and hear her story - which includes the work she is doing at DomainTools.

Nearly 20 years ago, DomainTools started collecting domain and DNS infrastructure data, creating a central repository from all the registrars so organizations could perform lookups on that data. Fast forward a bit, and the company pivoted to information security as organizations needed to gain intelligence as they dealt with threats, attacks, and compromises. Incident Response and SOC teams started to get some visibility into what was going on in the world of DNS, how that impacted their risk profile and helped guide them to make better information-driven decisions.

But proper security management and incident response programs don’t just happen magically. It takes proven processes and reliable data (among other things) to get the most out of a program. And this is what we discuss with Corin when we sit down with her in San Francisco:

  • The value of validated workflows and automation

  • The value of intelligence during investigations and threat hunting

  • How information can help multiple teams (and even companies) come together to collaborate in support of the business (and the industry)

There’s a lot to what Corin and the team of data scientists are up to. Have a listen as she shares some of their work with us during this chat.

It is a good story. Enjoy.
