ITSPmagazine Talk Show | Episode III | Guests Diedre Diamond, Julian Waits

Are you gonna walk that talk or just sit there?

Recorded in Las Vegas

Aren't you tired of hearing about the lack of diversity in cybersecurity? Because we have had enough.

Deidre Diamond (Founder & CEO, CyberSN)
Julian Waits (GM Cyber Business Unit, Devo)

Selena Templeton and Marco Ciappelli

Watch and listen to this episode of ITSPmagazine’s Unusual Gathering to hear how things are changing for the better and where we still have work to do if we want to truly experience the benefits of managing a diverse and inclusive business.

Here are some of the things we covered during this conversation:

Hiring for the wrong reasons (just to meet a diversity quota and ignoring qualifications).

How do we change the psyche/mindset of a generation?

What are the socio-economical reasons and/or implications for why we are not moving forward?

The importance of education and awareness at a young age for everyone.

One of the biggest issues about diversity in cybersecurity is that it is marketed to only a select group of people; there’s only a small population that relates to the image of the hacker guy in a hoodie.

When it comes to recruiting, hiring and retaining women and minorities, we have to start fishing outside of our tiny, homogeneous pools.

It’s 2018 and we still need to teach people basic common sense and decency?

Celebrities (musicians, actors, athletes) already speak to their fans and urge them to get out and vote, so we need to do that with cybersecurity, too. (Imagine AC/DC: ‘All right, before we rock you out, everyone get off public Wi-Fi!’)

Notable Quotes

How do you change the psyche of a generation? As a country, we’re at this weird place where diversity is talked about but still not instituted because the mindset hasn’t changed.
— Julian Waits
Socio-economically we’re not moving forward; we’re raising more poor than we ever have. And those kids have no opportunity to get into tech and cyber. So we’re not going to see a drastic change until that education is available.
— Deidre Diamond
Diversity is not only a unicorn, it’s something that is necessary. It’s a reality; you need it. So why are people still in denial about it?
— Marco Ciappelli
Cybersecurity does not just affect one industry, it now affects every industry, every person, and it should be taught in school along with reading, writing and long division.
— Selena Templeton
