Sam King, Senior Vice President and General Manager at CA Veracode (a part of CA Technologies), chats with ITSPmagazine’s Selena Templeton about her journey into InfoSec.
Sam shares how she “studied her way around the world,” starting with her first experience in a computer lab at her all-girls boarding school in India (and muses how it being the only air-conditioned room in the school may have influenced her decision!). She went to Scotland to get her Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, which then led to a Master’s in computer and information science in the U.S. – and shares how being in tech in three different countries compares.
The landscape of InfoSec was vastly different back in 2000 when she got her first job as developer out of university (it's a lot easier explaining to people at cocktail parties what she does in 2018!), and admits that when she started working in cybersecurity, her first thought was: “What have I done??” But she stuck with it because she saw the value in it – how she can help people, companies and society.
She talks about her move from university life to corporate life, the challenges she faced along the way, and how she managed up, down and across to grow her career and become a successful business leader.
It was a real delight to have this conversation with Sam whose passion for what she does shines through – and she sheds some light on the last 18 years of InfoSec from her point of view.
