To get a leg up in cyber, learn the basics of networking. This interactive workshop will take you through various areas of networking and provide a solid foundation for success in the cyber field. Understanding networking is highly recommended as you start or continue your journey in Cyber Security.

Agenda:

10-11 OSI layers, typical IT infrastructure, and using Wireshark
11-12 Capturing a HTTP exchange using wireshark
12-12:30 Tracing a packet on its journey
12:30-1:15 Lunch
1:15-2 Connections - TCP, three-way-handshake, netstat, and ping
2-2:45 Network foundations - DNS, DHCP, and their associated command line tools
2:45-4 Network components and building a network in Cisco Packetracer

Instructor: Garrett Whelan

Garrett Whelan is a Professor of Cyber Security at Long Beach City College and has been teaching IT, Networking, and Security for over 10 years and he has been working with technology even longer. He holds a Masters in Computer Science from Michigan Technological University and holds certifications in Linux, Networking, Windows Administration, Security, and Penetration Testing. At LBCC he oversees the largest Cyber Security program in Southern California which was recently designated an NSA Center of Academic Excellence-2Y.
